¡Obama visitará Cuba en Marzo! ¡Activistas Solidarios con Cuba Convocan Acciones contra el Bloqueo en Washington D.C. en Abril!

Los gobiernos de Estados Unidos y de Cuba anunciaron que el Presidente Obama visitará Cuba los días 21 y 22 de marzo.

El hecho de que un presidente norteamericano visite la isla es un nuevo y positivo avance en el largo camino hacia la normalización de las relaciones entre los dos países. Por primera vez luego del triunfo de la Revolución Cubana, un Presidente de Estados Unidos visitará la isla, lo que convierte la visita en un hecho histórico. En casi un siglo solo lo hizo Calvin Coolidge en 1928, 88 años atrás.

La visita de Obama es simbólica y muestra que a pesar de la reacción negativa de la ultraderecha, la atmósfera general es a favor de mejorar las relaciones, que se reiniciaron el 17 de diciembre de 2014. Las últimas encuestas de Gallup muestran que la mayoría de las personas apoyan el fin del bloqueo y el establecimiento de relaciones normales y esa brecha sigue creciendo. Ese es el sentimiento predominante en sectores cada vez más importantes de la sociedad estadounidense.

Recientemente se han realizado reuniones de alto nivel entre ambos gobiernos. Importantes acuerdos alcanzados sobre vuelos directos a Cuba de aerolíneas comerciales de Estados Unidos y el restablecimiento del servicio de correo postal. Sin embargo la realidad es que el bloqueo unilateral, injusto e inmoral de EE.UU a Cuba sigue intacto, provocando enormes pérdidas a la economía cubana y daños incuantificables a su población. Los programas de cambio de régimen continúan siendo financiados y el territorio de Guantánamo continúa ocupado por la Base Naval.

La normalización no puede avanzar si EE.UU no pone fin a la política errada durante más de 5 décadas. La responsabilidad de un cambio significativo recae en los Estados Unidos. Más allá de las leyes que deberá derogar el Congreso, Obama tiene potestad para hacer mucho más en relación al bloqueo y devolver Guantánamo a sus legítimos dueños, el pueblo cubano. Tiene todas las prerrogativas constitucionales y está en su poder hacerlo.

Para el movimiento de solidaridad con Cuba la visita de Obama nos da una oportunidad importante para impulsar aún más la lucha contra el bloqueo. No podemos sentarnos pasivamente a observar el desarrollo de los acontecimientos, debemos intervenir con más determinación que nunca en esta pequeña ventana de oportunidades que se abre en las relaciones entre EE.UU y Cuba.

¡NO PODRÍA EXISTIR UN MEJOR MOMENTO PARA PONER PRESIÓN Y PEDIR EL LEVANTAMIENTO DEL BLOQUEO Y LA DEVOLUCIÓN DE GUANTÁNAMO!

El Comité Internacional Paz, Justicia y Dignidad a los Pueblos, IFCO/Pastores por la Paz, la Brigada Venceremos, El Instituto de Estudios Políticos, y la Red Nacional de Solidaridad con Cuba están planeando la Segunda Jornada Contra el Bloqueo en Washington DC del 18 al 22 de Abril. Estamos organizando eventos públicos, visitas al Capitolio y muchas otras actividades.

NECESITAMOS LLEVAR NUESTRO MENSAJE AL CONGRESO DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS PARA DEMANDAR QUE PONGAN FIN AL CRIMINAL BLOQUEO UNILATERAL CONTRA CUBA.

Obama to visit Cuba in March!

Cuba Solidarity Activists to Convene in Washington D.C. in April! 

The announcement this morning by the governments of Cuba and the United States that President Obama will be visiting Cuba on March 21-22 is a positive development and signals another step on the road to normalization of relations between the two countries. This historic occasion will mark the first time that a sitting U.S. president has visited Cuba since Calvin Coolidge did it - some 88 years ago. 

Obama's visit is primarily symbolic and shows that despite right wing reaction the overall atmosphere of improved relations, that began on December 17, 2014, remains the prevailing sentiment in most sectors of U.S. society. Recent Gallup polls show that the majority of people support an end to the Blockade and the establishment of full normal relations and that gap continues to grow.

Recently there have been many high level meetings between the two governments and agreements have been reached on direct U.S. commercial airline flights and mail service. However the reality is that the unilateral and unjust blockade of Cuba remains completely intact. As long as that is the case and regime change programs remain funded and Guantanamo is occupied normalization will not happen. The onus for significant change rests with the U.S. We know that taking the blockade out of law will ultimately have to be carried out by Congress but there is still a lot Obama can do. And if he wanted to make his trip in March more than a political gesture he could announce, upon his arrival, that the U.S. was returning Guantanamo to its rightful owners - the Cuban people. For those of us in the solidarity movement to end the Blockade of Cuba Obama's visit gives us an important opportunity to push the struggle forward. This is not the time for us to sit back and watch events unfold but rather we need to seize the moment to intervene with more determination than ever before while this window of attention on U.S. - Cuba relations remains open.

THERE COULD BE NO BETTER TIME THAN NOW TO HAVE AN IMPACT ON ENDING THE  BLOCKADE, AND YOU CAN BE PART OF IT.

The International Committee for Peace, Justice and Dignity along IFCO/Pastors for Peace, the Venceremos Brigade, the Institute for Policy Studies and the National Network on Cuba are planning the 2^nd Days of Action against the Blockade in Washington DC April 18-22. The organizing has already begun and we need as many of you as possible to help bring people to D.C. 

We will be holding public events, grass roots advocacy visits to Capitol Hill, and many other activities that are still in the planning stages.
